I like war movies, especially World War II. They're the most common, especially those based in the European theater. Instead of covering well-trodden ground, Anthropoid heads to Prague and an effort to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich is Hitler's third in command and earned the name "the butcher of Prague" for his treatment of the people of Czechoslovakia during the German occupation.

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan do a really good job of portraying two exiled soldiers tasked with killing the man. They're not superheros with superhuman abilities. They're men who on a mission that they know they may not survive. They're not hardened soldiers, and develop relationships while planning their mission

Backing them is a resistance consisting of men, women, and even a teenaged boy. They all convey the dedication required to undertake such a perilous mission, even while they fear the repercussions from the Germans whether they succeed or fail. I was especially impressed by Anna Geislerova's performance as one of the resistance.

There is an action-filled climax, but the movie is so much more than just action. There's a depth that a popcorn action movie just never reaches, and that pays off by leaving the viewer with good feeling about spending two hours immersed in the story. I would put this on a similar level as the 2008 movie, Defiance.
