I like a little character development but this movie went overboard. Too much about the girl - not enough action. My kids liked it though. Jan 10, 2019
Up until "Bumblebee," i wasn't much of a fan of the Transformers series. the last three movies is way too long and I leave the theater empty. But "bumblebee" came along and for some reason I was hooked to the movie. I always like Bumblebee, even though I had problems with the series, but I happen to like the movie, making it the best of the Transformers movie. Even the first. the film is set in 1987 which will bring back memories of those who live the year. Bumblebee was sent to Earth that year to protect it from the evil Decipticons. where there he befriended a teen girl whose going though a tragedy. She is played by Hailee Steinfeld, and she does a fine job of going though the emotions of a teenage girl. John Cena in a good performance as a former US Army Ranger who is trick by the Decipticons into hunting down Bumbee. I also like the appealing performance from Pamela Adlon as Hailee's mother. Yes there is the same stuff as the last three Transformers movie, but the running time is less than 2 hours, but I came away with something. The people behind the Transformers movies had finally got it right. May 21, 2023
The Transformers movies aren’t known for their character development or strong storylines. It’s pretty much just robot action with humans thrown in for good measure. Bumblebee is a departure from that. There actually is some depth to the human characters and the story is decent. Much like Short Circuit from many years ago, the audience is able to connect with the title character even though he’s a robot, and you find yourself rooting for him in fights and feeling bad when he’s not coming out on top. This isn’t high cinema though. Hailee Steinfeld has done better work but she does the job she was hired to do. Plus, acting opposite a CGI character can’t be the best way to evoke a great performance. The humor, especially when it comes to her relationship with the neighbor boy, is pretty good. Rather than slip into trite cliches, they manage to ride the line pretty well. I can say that this is the best Transformers movie I’ve seen. However, I’m. Not a huge fan of brainless robot action, so I haven’t seen them all, and maybe this isn’t what fans of the other movies want to see. I enjoyed it.
