One look at the plot summary will tell you that this is not going to be a happy movie. The emotional turmoil suffered by a German woman is immense when her young son and husband are the victims of a bombing that targeted them simply because the husband was of Turkish descent.

The movie is broken up into three parts; each with very different tones. They take the audience on the journey with her as she deals with the aftermath of the attack, the court trial, and the aftermath of that trial as she attempts to move on.

In the Fade was Germany's submission for Best Foreign Film, and even though it didn't get nominated, it did win a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Motion Picture. Among other awards, director Fatih Akin was a nominee for the Palme d'Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and Diane Kruger won for Best Actress.

That award was well-deserved, as the movie succeeds or fails on Kruger's performance, and she is spot-on here. She takes a gritty role and becomes the character -- making you feel her pain, despair, and loss. Whereas a typical Hollywood movie would have made her into a super-antihero, this movie allows her to be flawed in many ways, and as a result, more real.
