Woman Walks Ahead is one of those movies that says that it's "based on a true story" but then takes enough liberties with the real events, that the end result is a mere shadow of the source material. I was not aware of the real story, so I went into this fresh, and I think I was better off for doing so.

The movie hinges upon the two leads, played by Jessica Chastain and Michael Greyeyes, and their ability to portray their characters to get the audience to care about them and their fate. Both did their jobs, even if the script perhaps let them down by not going deeply enough into the topic at hand. It's not a critical problem, but it would have been nice to see things fleshed out a little more, especially when it comes to how this New York woman was received by Sitting Bull's family and tribe, and also the government's side of things. We see some of the former in the actions of Sam Rockwell, but his choices needed more background to make them believable.

Basically all three of these actors are better than the material they were given. In less capable hands, this would not have been an enjoyable movie. However, we fortunately get the chance to see two very interesting characters interact, and we get to enjoy the marvelous landscapes that become another character in the story. The fact that New Mexico was used instead of South Dakota is yet another example of not being true to the original story, but acceptable nonetheless.

One final note is that hearing the Lakota language spoken so much was almost like listening to someone recite poetry. Even though the viewer doesn't always have subtitles to know what is being said, one still gets the idea, and the lack of subtitles gives the spoken language even more room to breathe in the scenes on screen.

There are some movies that seem to work really well by just stumbling across them. I watched this on Amazon Prime after it catching my eye, and it's an example of a good find when you're looking for something to watch.
