The challenge with any sequel is that it needs to add to the original story/universe without making the original look bad. Most accomplish the basic challenge, while very few sequels can eclipse the original.

A Quiet Place Part II is an example of the former.

It expands the original story, but it doesn't really tread any new ground. The original cast members from the first movie return, which is always a welcome sign.

The movie starts with a flashback to the fateful day when the creatures rampaged the hometown of the Abbott family. This is actually very effective by providing us with a glimpse into the world that was lost on that fateful day. It allows director John Krasinski to appear on-screen again, while also introducing Cillian Murphy's character.

The most compelling parts of this movie is the despair over the situation, as we follow Emily Blunt's character go back to town for supplies and facing the events (and the loss) of the first movie. Unfortunately, that aspect takes a back seat to the necessary action-filled finale.

That finale is actually pretty satisfactory, so it leaves the viewer with a good impression as the credits roll. Fans of the first movie will not be offended by this movie, and those just looking for a little more of the same should be happy with spending 97 minutes, very quietly, in the dark.
