This is a bland action movie that is passable, but not noteworthy. Action movies should grab your attention and not let go, because any opportunity for the grasp to be lost is a chance that you lose the viewer. I watched this movie in three sittings, which tells you how well it captured my attention. This is disappointing, since the cast does a decent job, and especially so, since director Taylor Sheridan previously helmed the very-good 'Wind River.' He did the screenplay here, and was responsible for the screenplays in 'Sicario,' 'Hell or High Water,' and 'Wind River.' With that kind of background, one wonders what happened here. There must be an explanation, but it could just be a misstep in an otherwise respectable resume. The overall plot centers on a boy in trouble as he is pursued by hired killers. He encounters a forest firefighter with a regrettable past played by Angelina Jolie. Hers is a character in need of some redemption, and helping the boy sets up a storyline that anyone could get into. The problem is, the assassins and the local cop and his wife that get pulled into the story are more interesting characters than the boy and the firefighter. This could have made for a compelling way to tell the story, as you have three pairs of characters whose arcs meet in the climax of the movie. However, the weakness of what should have been the primary relationship hampers the effectiveness of the entire movie. This is by no means a bad movie, but it is by no means something that you should seek out either. If you find it in passing, it's worth streaming, but it's not something to own on disc as it's not worth the money and it's likely not something you'll watch more than once. Definitely a "Wait for Rental" in my book. Looking for more opinions?Check out our Featured Movie Reviews for Those Who Wish Me Dead. |
