Here's an indie filmmaker's dream come true: financed with their own money, shot on weekends and holidays then fought over by indie film distributors.

Knowing that, expect a good story told without a lot of Hollywood tricks. Open Water is a fun movie based on the story of two Australian divers left behind by their dive boat, though this film takes place in the Bahamas.

Though it's impossible to do more than speculate on events that take place far removed from anyone, this film does a better than good job of building the characters, story and suspense. Still, don't expect a lot of gore because most of this action is off screen.

There is also a lot of talk about the nudity in the movie as well. Necessary or not? Well, that's why there's a lot of talk about it because it's really a decision on the part of the filmmakers to include a scene that doesn't affect the story in any way. That doesn't mean it isn't necessary, either. Easily it could be included to draw a larger male audience. It can also be argued that this is a couple who is in love and this is what couples do on vacation. If we weren't a society of prudes it probably would have passed without comment.

All in all, Open Water is a fun movie that most likely will not draw the attention Blair Witch did, despite the comparisons of style. Go see it. Support independent films!

Very good movie. Don't go in expecting Jaws, or anything like it, but this is a very good movie, and worth seeing in the theaters.

This movie was very emotional for me. I remember when this happened some years back in Australia and was horrid struck at that time. Watching it brought the terror of what was happening to these people to the front because I knew it was really based on fact. Naturally no one knows what dialogue went on between this couple, but what the writers did with it was very good. The blame, the accusations, professing of love, etc. would have been more than an educated guess because I bet that is what could have transpired between the two as reality set in for them. And as far as the brief nude scene, SO WHAT! It did not dwell on that. Here was a young married couple doing what comes naturally. Don't let that discourage you from seeing this movie.

With an indie-sized budget and a non-veteran, Open Water is as taut as it probably could have been. While this causes the movie to be less than it could have been, it also means that it has a crude style that works at some points and doesn't at others.

The isolation and fear as a result of being left out in the open ocean is definitely portrayed as you watch these two characters try to deal with their situation. Their dialogue is not smooth, but would it be polished if you were stuck in the middle of the ocean with your girlfriend?

After the credits roll, you have with you this sense of dread that has been with you the whole time. I didn't expect the ending, although it's not unrealistic, nor do you feel cheated like many did after the end of "The Blair Witch Project." While it didn't convey any deep philosophical concepts or cause major character arcs on the part of the main characters, I enjoyed it for what it was.

You can surely bet that I won't be going on any scuba-diving expeditions any time soon...
