It would be difficult to give a Hitchcock movie starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman anything but a See Now! rating, but in the case of "Notorious" it is nonetheless well-deserved.

Here is a movie that is dialogue-driven, but contains more suspense and tension than many contemporary action movies. Acts of devotion and betrayal are communicated without hitting the viewer over the head and insulting their intelligence. That approach is carried throughout, where the viewer is allowed to bring something to the movie, but they are being constantly guided by a combination of dialogue, camera-work, pacing, and music. Even if you don't notice the finer points at first, they serve to keep you going in the right direction toward the conclusion of the story.

That conclusion has to be one of the best endings I've seen in a movie. The "confrontation" ends perfectly, but unexpectedly, even though my immediate reaction was that Cary Grant's character should have chosen differently at the end.

This is a movie that you can probably watch a dozen times, and see new things every time. Just reading Roger Ebert's review of the movie makes me want to see it again so I can see what he pointed out. It's a perfect movie to watch with a group and talk about it afterward.

If you enjoy movies, make sure that you balance your consumption of contemporary "popcorn" and "potato chip" movies with movies like "Notorious."
