"Nights in Rodanthe" should've been titled "A Nightmare in Rodanthe." I mean it. I want a simple love story, not a second-rate soap opera. I like the chemistry between Richard Gere and diane Lane and I even like the big house by the sea, But the film has too many unintentional characters coming by and disrupting them. Gere plays a doctor whose simply procedure has killed a patient and Lane has a deal with a cheating husband. And her kids didn't help any. All they do is cry on cue. These are type of character that can destroy a movie like "Nights in Rodanthe." If you want to improve the movie, just get rid of the characters. Send them back to Lifetime cable. this film should be about Gere, Lane and the house. Nothing more. the only joy I got from this movie is seeing Diane Lane. she is sexy and she can handle romantic movies. Except this one. She's a joy to watch. She makes those night in Rodanthe seems less stressful.

This is an excellent romantic movie. Gere and Lane are quite believable. The background ocean and beach scenes are a fine addition.

Despite the critics' poor opinion of this film, I give it a solid "A." It's a wonderful love story in a beautiful setting with two pretty people. I especially enjoyed the closeups against the ocean and the bright colors. As in real life, you feel the pauses. And how cool to give roles to people in their '50's.

If you look for meaning, what a positive view of love it renders. I also enjoyed how the film dealt with the old saw of following your heart versus dealing with all the consequences - weighing everything, thinking it through, balancing society's expectations of responsibilities towards your past and family.

I earnlestly cared what happend to the characters - a sign of a very good film.
