The only problem I had with "Defiance" is that it came too soon after "Valkyrie." there is some scenes in this film that are hard to take. but I going to give this film a mild yes vote, because I want future generations who study history to take a look at this film. It is powerful to the core. I like this film.

Excellent from start to finish, gave me a real appreciation of what the Jewish people endured. I hadn't realized some of them fought back. If more of them had fought, the Germans would not have been able to slaughter millions of them. Let that be a lesson to the rest of us.

This movie opened in the final days of 2008 and didn't make much of an impact. While it did get an Oscar nomination for the score by James Newton Howard, it failed to recover its budget while it was in theaters.

However, many movies that don't do very well in theaters get a second chance when released on video, so viewers have the opportunity to enjoy good movies they might have missed. Defiance earns a place on the list of movies that are worth renting.

Daniel Craig (the latest James Bond) and Liev Schrieber (X-Men: Origins) play Jewish brothers on the run from the Nazis in World War II Eastern Europe. They take to the familiar forest and end up becoming leaders of a band of refugees. While the Nazis are the real enemy, the movie primarily concerns itself with the interaction of the two brothers and how they differ in their beliefs about how to survive and resist the Nazi troops.

While Daniel Craig got most of the focus of the movie's marketing, it's the cast as a group that makes the movie successful. The relationships that are formed in the refugee camp, and the divergent experiences of the two brothers as they follow their own paths, create an interesting story and the plot is not predictable.

Give Defiance a try. It has action without being only an action movie and it has heart without being melodramatic.
