Top shelf acting, intriguing story. One of the best films of the year. Feb 4, 2009
Last week, I saw Kate Winslet's performance in "Revolutionary road." Can she tops herself this week with "The Reader?" the answer is yes. she can top herself in almost anything she does. "the Reader" is a powerful drama based on the German novel about a passionate affair between a woman Hanna Schmitz, played by Winslet and a young boy she saved played by David Kross. Later in the movie, Schmitz is put on trial for war crimes and was sentenced to life. During that time though the help of that young man, she learn how to write and read by listening to him read. I love this movie. "The Reader" is powerful brilliant drama sat against the backdrop of Nazi Germany. We don't see the signs of Nazi Germany in the background. All I saw are two people who share their passion for the power of the book. May 13, 2009
This movie takes a long time to build, and for some, that will be too long to keep them from giving up on it. Kate Winslet won an Oscar for her performance, and I think some of that had to be because of her willingness to take on such an unglamorous role. Even though she spends a good share of the first part of the movie undressed, she's playing an ordinary person with internal demons having an affair with a teenage boy. In the second half of the movie, she's an unsympathetic character that is dealing with her actions and aging most ungracefully. I'm not sure that's Oscar-worthy, but I'm not the one handing out the awards. The Reader is definitely worth watching, but keep in mind that patience will be necessary to take it all in. Oct 13, 2012
