Michael Caine in a vigilante movie? How is that going to work? Those were the thoughts running through my head before watching Harry Brown. Even though Caine isn't the obvious choice when thinking about a movie that resembles the Charles Bronson Death Wish movies, he brings a level of sophistication that, without which, the movie might have fallen flat. The result is a good thriller that is pretty believable. The movie sets the mood right away. You have no doubt about the state of affairs in the housing complex in which Harry lives, and the ending to the scene is just as jolting as the shooting that happens moments earlier. James Berardinelli talks about this being a movie more about society than it is about a select few bad guys that end up being the targets of the good guy vigilante. The bad element is not a few bad seeds, but rather an entire community of miscreants that serve no useful purpose in life and see riots and personal violence as a way of passing time. This is Caine's movie, and he does it with aplomb. It's worth watching if you're up for this kind of movie. Looking for more opinions?Check out our Featured Movie Reviews for Harry Brown. |
