There are times when The Company Men is very insightful and without a word being said, forces the viewer to look at themselves and examine whether they are guilty of the same sins as those depicted in the movie.

This is largely due to the solid performances by Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, and Ben Affleck. You feel the pain these guys are enduring, even if they brought some of it upon themselves. The effectiveness of a scene without a spoken word demonstrates the ability of the actor and of the director to craft that scene to the intended result.

However, the movie overall is very laid back and doesn't seem all that eager to focus on any particular storyline or character arc. This is perhaps the intent; the viewer can see everything laid out before them, and each one of these characters should have seen the writing on the wall and prepared for the day that came.

But we're all guilty of that to some degree. We don't have enough saved for not just a rainy day, but the day when the rain takes your house, your car, and your job. Losing one's job strips you of your self-worth, no matter what your financial status or materialistic tendencies. Everyone goes to work everyday to earn a living for them (and their families). What happens when you don't have a job to go to anymore? You may think yourself quite valuable and employable should that day happen, but what happens when months go by and you are still unemployed?

How you feel about yourself, your life, and what it all means is the story being told here. The movie may hit too close to home for some, especially those that have gone through being fired. For those that have jobs, it can serve as a wake-up call to prepare for that day when it starts like any other day, and falls apart before lunch.
