I stumbled across this movie on Turner Classic Movies, and ended up recording it so that I could watch it all. I can't say that I'm a big Bette Davis fan, but she does a good job here, and she was rewarded with a Best Actress nomination for her work. Her supporting cast is also very good, and even the most casual movie fan will recognize Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan. George Brent does well, but it was Geraldine Fitzgerald as Davis' best friend that impressed me the most. She's given the most to do in the movie, but as a supporting actor, she's relegated to Davis' shadow. I found myself wondering what the movie would have been like if the roles had been reversed... The subject of a pretty young woman with her whole life in front her having a brain tumor isn't light fare, but the movie does a good job of telling the story without dipping into sappy drama. I especially liked the ending and how restrained it was. Robert Osborne, in his usual great introduction (which is a hallmark of TCM's broadcasts), tells of Bette Davis' struggle to star in this movie, and how many others passed the movie by, thinking it unmarketable. Her determination saw it through and the result is well worth watching. I recommend it! Looking for more opinions?Check out our Featured Movie Reviews for Dark Victory. |
