Robert Altman’s strength is strong screenplays and large casts, and he doesn’t disappoint with this solid tale of an old woman, her family, and her friends. Altman makes amends for a slow beginning with a perfect combination of drama and humor. The rich setting is the deep south of Mississippi, and much of the appeal of Cookie’s Fortune results from the simple, backwoods life of the town’s residents. Liv Tyler and Charles Dutton are a joy to watch, and Glenn Close is perfectly cast. Favorite part: Liv Tyler’s parking habits.

One of the best films from director Robert Altman, "Cookie's Fortune" is a film with a big cast in a movie that's well-written, laid back and fun to watch. Paticia Neal plays Cookie, who killed herself while her half-baked daughters (Glenn Close & Julianne Moore) had turn it to frame Charles S. Dutton, who plays Cookie's friend. Director Altman and screenwriter Anne Rapp knows how to make a wonderful film about the south.
