This movie is pretty good and worth seeing while it still is in the theaters. For those who haven't seen the trailer he plays a thief, with a high pain tolerance, who gets betrayed and then goes after the person who betrays him for the $70,000 that he is owed. A lot has been said about the violence in this movie. Personally, I think that it is overhyped. But it is on a level similar to the "Crow" movies And the humor is darker than that of the "Lethal Weapon" movies. Jan 25, 2000
I thought this movie had too much of a dark side and having 'Mr.Good Guy" Mel Gibson star in the lead role only provides acceptance to the premise that its O.K. to be violent and break the law as long as you have a good reason for doing so. This movie sends the wrong message. The story line was totally unbelievable; even a Steven Segal movie was more credible than this plot. The only comic relief was Lucy Liu's performance as a sado-masochistic hooker in vinyl. Jan 25, 2000
this is a great movie!! a must see!! though, some gory moments, those with week stomaches may want to avoid or at least close their eyes at these times. it is a sensational movie with a lot of fun!! mel gibson is great!! and of course, very sexy....!! the other actors, none of which i know the names, except lucy liu, were extremly great and powerful. mel gibon plays porter a man who is vengful of his best friend cause he stole his money and his girl. and mel says it's time for Payback!! a must see!! please do what u have to do to go see it!!!! I recommend the movie, with a few insights. If you like Mel Gibson this is a must see. His face covers the screen many times. If you like action movies this is a must see. The movie was packed with brutal scences of revenge and in some cases very clever entrapment action sets. However, if you like movies that have some relation to reality you will not like the movie. Mel Gibson has nine lives in this movie. He survives so many clubbings and shoot-outs you soon realize there is absolutely nothing that can kill him. Once you accept this you can settle into a movie with unending action. At this point you can enjoy this movie. Don't go into the movie expecting some movie that is beliveable, but rather a movie that features Mel Gibson in many incredible scenes of survival. You are left with the notion that Mel Gibson scripted the movie to make himself the "coolest, most invincible, likable bad guy in film history. Overall, in spite of my negative remarks, I really enjoyed the movie, even though no human could have lived through one of the scenes. Hay, it's movie. Jeff Brand Jan 25, 2000
This movie you must see. If you are a Mel Gibson fan or not, this movie is excellent. Mel Gibson is great in the movie. I have not seen a movie that Mel has not been great in. The movie is filled with action and humor. Be prepared for a couple of gross parts. The actors are superb, and the film editing is excellent. If you don't see this, then you missed out on one of the best movies. Jan 25, 2000
This was an OK movie, but had a classic downfall for diehard Mel Gibson fans. I felt it very hard to get into Gibson's role of "Porter" because it was very different from the kind of hard off, good guy we're used to seeing in movies like the Lethal Weapon series. I'm not disputing the fact that itwas an OK movie, but don't go in expecting Martin Riggs (LW), or I think you will be let down. Jan 25, 2000
First of all....I liked it. Watching Mel Gibson in this film was like watching one of the "Lethal Weapon" movies without Danny Glover co-starring. This time Mel Gibson is not on the side of the law but on the side of lawlessness. After a narrow escape with death at the hands of one local crime-syndicate member, Mel goes on the revenge path and begins taking on anyone who stands in his way. Fueling his passion for revenge is $70,000 dollars that was taken from him by his one-time partner. You will find this action-packed film to be filled with humorous one-liners and a few scenes that are quite graphic. This movie will not win Mel any awards, but it will entertain you as much as any of his previous films. Bottom line...if you are currently seeking revenge on someone who ripped you off for thousands of dollars and then left you for dead, I encourage you to check out this film for some great tips on how to get even. OK, I agree that this movie isn't your typical Mel Gibson flick, but it was worth seeing. The main character could better have been played by van Damme or Segal, or even Stallone, since the movie is more their type, but Gibson did show a range of talent that includes more than good guy roles. This movie was alright..not as funny as I thought it would be. I wouldn't go jumping to see it again though. Jan 25, 2000
Was it just me or did the trailers to "Payback" look like "The Big Hit," right down to the typeset used for the logo? I was in for a long afternoon unless good old Mel could save what looked to be a wretched mess. The good news is it wasn't as bad as I had feared. On a basic, mindless level, Payback passes a couple of hours and is almost palatable in points. But it isn't a good movie. The dialogue grates like fingernails on a chalkboard ("That's just MEAN, man!"). There are so many plot holes I lost count. Events happen because they need to, not due to a natural flow of the storyline. Cops pull up just as Porter (Mel Gibson) is about to be severely beaten by goons he has crossed. Those same goons, looking for revenge, pull next to the vehicle Porter is riding in and start shooting, "saving" Porter from a sticky situation. This isn't a believable development, it's a deus ex machina. The casting is also uninspired: The top figure of the syndicate that we see is Kris Kristofferson, who still can't act his way out of a paper bag, much less have us believe that he is William Devane and James Coburn's boss. 10-point scale rating: 4 Jan 25, 2000
I regret spending my money on this movie... I personally love Mel Gibson in all his varied roles of Lethal Weapon to Braveheart but this darkside was too much for me to handle. The amount of violence towards women in general is enough to turn a person's stomach adding the violence in general! I would not recommend my friends or my family to this movie... being a mother of 3, I have always believed to have an "open mind" when it comes to our weekly trips to the show house... but this movie should be banned for its distaste! Even though this movie was a major production, with excellent acting, excellent actors, excellent directing, was never slow or even remotely boring, I have to put it on my list of movies I wasted my time seeing. The trailers for this movie accented on humor, but I see no reason to laugh. I love movies, and I can enjoy most anything, but even Jade seemed soft compared to the violence in Payback. The theatre was packed, but by the end of the first half-hour, several people left, and I couldn't stomach the brutality. Mel Gibson doesn't need a shock value type movie to be seen on the screen. Mel Gibson's character was out to hurt people and prove he could take any punch, kick, hammer, etc. his opponents could dish out. I guess if you like to see massive violence, go for it. Jan 25, 2000
Too many holes and contrived plot twists. It also had too much violence for its own sake -- and not part of a well-developed story. Also, with all the violence (some sadistic), I couldn't believe the number of kids at the movie. Jan 25, 2000
Payback is a very fun MOVIE, that's the keyword MOVIE. Everyone seems to be looking for a film that'll change their lives. Payback isn't billing itself as one of those movies, it's a nonstop action adventure. If you're looking for a good shoot/beat em up movie with an entertaining story and some fimiliar faces, here it is. On a scale of 1-10, I give Payback an 8 and 1/2. May 31, 2003
Mel Gibson is out for \"Playback,\" is this action thriller as he is looking for those who screw him out of some cash. A first-rate entetainment. Jul 21, 2003
I liked it, it was a little off-base and kept it from being a formulaic also-ran. Jun 28, 2012
