The IMAX® company now has a Digital Projection System that uses laser technology and combines it with a new sound system, which it calls "IMAX with Laser."

According to the IMAX website's description:

IMAX with Laser has been designed from the ground-up exclusively for IMAX screens. The experience is set apart by its next-generation 4K laser projection system which features a new optical engine and a suite of proprietary IMAX technologies that deliver increased resolution, sharper and brighter images, deeper contrast as well as the most distinct, exotic colors ever available on-screen.

The new experience also features IMAX's 12-channel sound technology with new side and overheard channels that deliver greater dynamic range and precision for the ultimate in audio immersion.

Compared to a traditional IMAX, especially those installed in multiplex theaters (not the very tall old-school IMAX), moviegoers should see a better quality picture and enjoy a more immersive sound system.

IMAX announced an agreement with AMC Theatres in April 2018 to install IMAX with Laser systems in 87 AMC locations across the United States.
