A new microcinema has opened in Burlington, Vermont, filling a vacuum left when the Roxy Cinemas closed.

The Partizanfilm opened December 3, 2025 at 230 College Street, which is right next door to the former Merrill's Roxy Cinemas, which closed in November 2024.

Founded by five local people, it is a member-run nonprofit organization. The theater has two screens where moviegoers should expect to see new releases as well as classic movies and foreign films. The microcinema classification is apt, as the auditoriums are small, each seating just 31 and 19 people. The theater's website emphasizes that attention has been paid to providing "comfortable seating, excellent sight lines, and high-quality projection and sound."

Memberships are $60 per year, which provides a discount off the standard ticket prices. The model seems to be popular, with the theater's website mentioning that it has more than 800 members. That's an indication that the community supports the idea, but the true test will be when their first year has passed, and memberships come up for renewal.

The theater is playing movies currently that can't be found in any other movie theaters within 50 miles of Burlington, which means that they're filling a niche that could resonate with the surrounding community.

The Academy Award nominated Arco is an animated fantasy about a 10 year old from the future that travels back to 2075 and discovers a world in peril. Jodie Foster's A Private Life is a mystery that involves Foster's psychiatrist who investigates the murder of one of her patients. Also playing is Jordan's submission for the Academy Awards, All That's Left of You, which is a drama about a Palestinian teenager who gets swept into a protest in the Occupied West Bank and experiences a moment of violence that rocks his family.

The theater's website also mentions that it offers "Reperatory Wednesdays," which is currently offering French films from the 1980s.
