The Sunset Drive-in in Hartford, Michigan will not reopen for the 2024 season.

Located north of I-94 between Hartford and Watervliet on Red Arrow Highway, the theater originally opened in 1948. It delivered the news that it wouldn't open on its website and its Facebook page earlier this week:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Sunset Drive-In theater this summer. As a family-owned establishment, our operations are deeply intertwined with the well-being of our own family members. Unforeseen health challenges within our family require us to take a step back at this time.

In light of this, both Sunset Drive-In and its sister theater 5 Mile Drive-In are available for sale. Should you have any inquiries or wish to explore opportunities further, please reach out.

We can't thank you all enough for the love and support you've shown us. We hope your summer is filled with fun adventures!

Their website also mentions that both this theater and its sister theater, the 5 Mile Drive-In in Dowagiac (which also is not opening for the 2024 season), are for sale.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Loma Theatre in Coloma, the Celebration! Cinema - Benton Harbor in Benton Harbor, and the Michigan Theatre - South Haven in South Haven. The closest drive-in movie theater is the Tri-Way Drive-In in Plymouth, Indiana.
