The parent company of MJR Theatres in the United States and Landmark Cinemas in Canada has reached an agreement to acquire Emagine Entertainment.

Belgium-based Kinepolis Group NV and Michigan-based Emagine Entertainment announced today that Kinepolis will add Emagine's fourteen locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin to its list of movie theaters. The company currently operates ten locations in Michigan under the MJR Theatres brand.

The press release mentions that Emagine also "provides support" to movie theaters in Minnesota and Colorado, as well as the Emagine Woodhaven and The Riviera Cinema Powered by Emagine in Michigan. The release doesn't mention them as well, but two additional locations are named similarly to the latter location: the Birmingham 8 Powered by Emagine in Birmingham and the Quality 10 Powered by Emagine in Saginaw. Doing the math brings the total number of locations down to fourteen.

Kinepolis Group hopes to complete the acquisition by the end of 2025. Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group, was quoted in the announcement: 

With the acquisition of Emagine Entertainment, we are back on track with the execution of our expansion strategy since the pandemic. We do this with a high-quality asset in a market where we have had positive experiences with our Kinepolis concepts. The location and size of the cinemas make them a valuable addition to the Group's portfolio, allowing us to expand our presence in the US market and strengthen our national structure. We are excited to welcome the new teams to the Kinepolis family.

The combination of MJR Theatres and Emagine Entertainment locations will total 24 movie theaters, which will make the parent company the seventh largest exhibitor in the United States (in terms of locations). The company operates 63 movie theaters in Europe under the Kinepolis brand, and 35 locations in Canada under the Landmark Cinemas brand name.

Our Take

I have been impressed with my visits to Emagine locations in Wisconsin and Illinois and my interactions with Emagine management and staff. While acquisitions rarely leave the target unscathed, it's my hope that Kinepolis will continue to deliver that level of service to its customers.
