Memphis, TN: Malco Summer Drive-In For Sale, Still Plans to Reopen in April

The Malco Summer Drive-In in Memphis, Tennessee is for sale, but still plans to open next month.

Located about twelve miles east of downtown Memphis where I-40, I-240, and Sam Cooper Boulevard meet, the drive-in movie theater has been showing movies under the stars since it opened as a twin-screen operation in 1966. It is operated by Malco Theatres, which operates 30+ locations in Tennessee and five other states.

The Commercial Appeal published an article recently (see below) in which the president and chief operating officer of Malco Theatres was quoted as saying "We know it’s beloved by a lot of people, but it hadn’t really been performing the way that it needs to perform to be sustainable."

The 31-acre property is now listed for sale for an unlisted price. It is being pitched as a commercial lot, so the hopes of it continuing as a drive-in movie theater are not high. The land is assessed at about $185,000 with a total assessment of almost $331,000.

To see what's playing and when, keep an eye on the Showtimes page for the Malco Summer Drive-In. If the drive-in does close, there aren't any drive-in theaters within 50 miles, so if you were thinking of seeing a movie outdoors this summer, make your plans when the theater opens in April!
