The Regal Times Square in New York City is now the site of the world's largest 4DX auditorium, according to a press release issued recently.

Located near Times Square on 42nd Street, the movie theater was previously known as the Regal E-Walk, losing the the part of its name that it's had since it opened in 1999. However, it makes much more sense to connect it to the larger-than-life spectacle that is Times Square just down the street.

4DX is described as a "multi-sensory cinema-going experience, allowing audiences to connect with movies through motion, vibration, water, wind, snow, lightning, scents, and other special effects that enhance the visuals on-screen." The seats move in sync with the on-screen action, turning the movie-watching experience into something much more involving.

The news was announced in a press release from CJ 4DPLEX and Cineworld Group, the parent company of Regal. Executives from the two companies are quoted as saying:

The press release mentions that the two companies installed 296 seats in a premium large format (PLF) auditorium. The screen measures 60 feet wide. This is also the first movie theater in North America to have two 4DX auditoriums. The second auditorium has 128 4DX seats.

CJ 4DPLEX also provides ScreenX experiences in movie theaters, which use multiple projectors for a 270 degree viewing experience. We reviewed our ScreenX experience in September 2023. The two technologies can be combined in some auditoriums in something that the company is calling ULTRA 4DX. That combination must take the moviegoing experience into the realm of amusement park ride...
