Norfolk, VA: Macarthur Center Movie Theater Closed

Closed Sign

The movie theater in the Macarthur Center in Norfolk, Virginia has closed. The Regal Macarthur Center showed its last movies late last month after serving the area since 1999.

While the closure of many Regal locations in recent times seem tied to the bankruptcy filing by its parent company in 2022, the fate of this location may be linked more clearly to the fact that the Macarthur Center mall is facing a closure of its own. Based on some news articles published recently (see below), the shopping center will be closing in June 2026 for a major redevelopment project.

Enclosed malls are so passé, so we expect that the redeveloped shopping center will be an open-air setup that will require quite a bit of reconstruction. Hopefully, they build it in such a way that it's easy to convert to being enclosed when that trend comes full-circle...

Where to Watch Movies on the Big Screen

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Commodore Theatre in Portsmouth, the Naro Expanded Cinema in Norfolk, and the Cinema Cafe - Greenbrier - Chesapeake in Chesapeake. If you have Regal gift cards to use, or if you just prefer the Regal experience, the closest location is the Regal Harbour View Grande, which is about eight miles away in Suffolk.
