The Oscars award ceremony was held Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and was televised live on ABC starting at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
The nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards were announced Monday, March 15, 2021 by actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas and singer, songwriter and actor Nick Jonas. Broadcasting live from London, they announced the nominees in 23 categories.
I thought the way they handled the ceremony this year was very good. Hopefully, they will integrate some of the things they did this year in future ceremonies. I liked that they emphasized the legacy of movies in the lives of those involved in the industry, as well as society in general. The number of host-led comedy routines was kept to a minimum, and Glenn Close proved her knowledge of music in the movies, and even demonstrated her dance moves.
The "In Memoriam" segment went by way too quickly, with some names fading so quickly that you couldn't even read it before it was gone. The Academy website has a special In Memoriam section that helps fill out what should have been a better dedication to those from the movie industry we lost in the past year.
As always, the ceremony ended quite abruptly. This seems odd for a ceremony celebrating industry achievements, when they run out the door as if they overstayed their welcome and couldn't figure out how to make a graceful exit. It could be something as simple as a final statement by someone thanking everyone for coming or Frances McDormand's appeal to everyone to see Nomadland on the biggest screen possible, and to take everyone out to a movie theater to watch all the nominated movies.
Some of these movies are playing in theaters, while many have already made it to home video. Being nominated usually causes some of them to make a return appearance in theaters, and winning usually causes a return engagement for at least the top-line award winners. Head over to the Academy Award® Winners and Nominees page to see where and when they're playing!
