The 95th Oscars were awarded during a live ceremony Sunday, March 12, 2023 at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, which was televised live on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel served as the host and did not shy away from "The Slap" from last year, the lack of women nominated for some awards, and other topics.
In The Fabelmans, Mitzi Fabelman (played by Michelle Williams) says, "Movies are dreams that you never forget." I can't agree more. To watch a movie is to share the dreams of the filmmakers, and regardless of your opinion of the production value of the televised ceremony, it's impossible to ignore an opportunity to celebrate all movies by honoring those involved that are regarded as the best of the past year.
The nominations for the 95th Oscars were announced January 24, 2023, by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams. It was live-streamed online and broadcast on ABC during the Good Morning America television show.
The musical performance of the night was by Lady Gaga, as she performed "Hold My Hand" from Top Gun: Maverick. Many of these types of performances seem so canned that you're pulled out of the moment, and that wasn't the case here.
When Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won for their original screenplay for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Scheinert thanked the teachers in his life that influenced him, which was a great reminder to everyone that great achievements are only possible because of the teachers in this world. Even the naturally talented are made better by talented guidance and dedication shown by those called to teach future generations.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was the big winner of the night, with seven awards. Its win for Best Picture was foreshadowed when it started racking up the other awards (Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, Directing, and Actress in a leading role).
All in all, they kept the ceremony moving. It was all over by 10:30pm Central Time; clocking in at 3.5 hours. This is a good 30 minutes earlier than some years, which was welcome (even if it came at the expense of the In Memoriam segment, which almost always happens).
How to Watch the Winners and Nominees
Some of these movies are playing in theaters, while many have already made it to home video. Being nominated usually causes some of them to make a return appearance in theaters, and winning usually causes a return engagement for at least the top-line award winners. Head over to the Academy Award® Winners and Nominees page to see where and when they're playing!
