The dates for the 99th Academy Awards have been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC. The 100th Oscars will be the last ceremony broadcast on television, marking the end of a very long tradition.
Nominations Announced
The nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards will be announced Thursday, January 21, 2027.
Awards Ceremony
The 99th Oscars will be awarded Sunday, March 14, 2027 at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The ceremony will be broadcast on ABC in more than 200 territories worldwide.
The 100th Oscars has been scheduled for Sunday, March 5, 2028. Mark your calendars!
The press release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences noted that "All dates for the 99th and 100th Academy Awards® are subject to change."
The Oscars are Moving to YouTube in 2029
In December 2025, the Academy announced that it signed a multi-year deal giving YouTube exclusive global rights to the Oscars beginning in 2029 and through 2033. This means that the 100th Oscars will be the last broadcast on ABC and the end of a 75-year tradition of televised ceremonies.
“We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor.
“The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community. This collaboration will leverage YouTube’s vast reach and infuse the Oscars and other Academy programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honoring our legacy. We will be able to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers and provide access to our film history on an unprecedented global scale.”
Given the massive shift in viewing habits away from broadcast television and the inherent global reach of an online video platform, this news seems like a natural progression forward. The phrase "the devil is in the details" is well-known for a reason, so it will be interesting to watch that first broadcast and see how they do and whether they will incorporate any of the features that the platform provides or if it will just be an online clone of a traditional television broadcast.
