Academy Puts "Popular Movies" Category on Hold

In August, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced several changes to the Academy Awards Ceremony, better known as "the Oscars." One of the changes was the addition of a "popular movie" award category, but they didn't have any specifics. The idea was to recognize movies that have mainstream appeal but not necessarily the kind of movie that traditionally drew the attention of Oscar voters.

My response was one of skepticism, especially since there were few details. I likened it to Coca-Cola's "New Coke" introduction in 1985. Quite a few people in the industry felt the say way, with some calling it the "death of the film business" which reached a little too far, to say the least.

Given the recent announcement by the Academy that they were putting the idea on hold, they may have agreed that this was an idea that wasn't completely baked.

“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We have made changes to the Oscars over the years—including this year—and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”

The other two changes are going forward, however. While the 2019 ceremony will be held in late February, the next ceremony will be on February 9, 2020. The 2019 broadcast will be shorter, clocking in at three hours, with six to eight (as yet determined) categories being awarded during commercial breaks, with highlights shown afterward. We'll see if these changes stick...

The 2019 Academy Awards Ceremony will be televised on ABC on February 24, 2019.
