The weekend box office results are in, and unsurprisingly, Avengers: Endgame took the #1 spot with $350M. That number is notable for two reasons. The biggest news is the number itself. No other movie has made $350M in its opening weekend. Looking at worldwide results, that number jumps to $1.2B! Second, it's a 3-hour movie, so there were less shows this weekend than there would have been if it were a 2-hour movie.
Avengers: Endgame opened in 4,662 theaters, which is part of what fueled its record-breaking performance.
Previously, the biggest opening weekend was this movie's predecessor: Avengers: Infinity War. It brought in nearly $258M on its opening weekend last year in 4,474 theaters. Doing the math, that means that Endgame made more than $75,000 per theater, with Infinity War making just under $58,000 per theater its opening weekend.
As far as occupying the most theaters, the previous record holder (in our records going back to late 2007) was Despicable Me 3 in 2017, with 4,529 theaters. This level of saturation is not unheard of (seven movies have appeared in more than 4,400 theaters in one weekend), but no other movie has reached so high when it's done so.
Time will tell how the following weekends fare. Movies typically drop around 50% in their second weekend, and Infinity War was no different (56%). Much like last year, Endgame won't have any serious competition next weekend, but the loyal fans who have seen the 3-hour spectacle multiple times just this weekend likely aren't going to keep that up, so the inevitable attrition will happen. Infinity War stayed in the Top 10 report for nine weeks, so it will be interesting to see how long Endgame can hold out with movies like Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Dark Phoenix coming to theaters and vying for the attention of fans.
