It appears that Star Wars: Episode VII will have some footage shot with large-format IMAX cameras. Director J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot tweeted the following image earlier this week:
While there was no explanatory text, they did include the hashtag #bestformatever, so given the desert landscape, the source, and the fact that the aforementioned movie has begun filming, it's safe to assume that at least some of Star Wars: Episode VII will feature scenes shot in the format.
Here's hoping that when it comes time to release the movie on home video, they don't do the same aspect ratio dance that Christopher Nolan has been doing in his movies. To those of you producing Blu-ray and DVD discs: seamless branching is your friend!
