Batavia, NY: Batavia Businessman Buys Batavia Mall I & II

Posted on Thursday, March 7th, 2013 and updated on Monday, August 25th, 2014 5:35 PM

In January, the Dipson Batavia Mall I & II in Batavia, New York was facing closure if a buyer couldn't be found. The Daily News and The Batavian reported recently that local businessman Ken Mistler has purchased the theater.

The Daily News article:

It was at his mother’s urging that business owner Ken Mistler pursued ownership of the former Dipson Theater.

After taking some time to consider the expense and effort of operating a movie theater, Mistler bought the site at 6 Alva Place this month.

“When my mother found out they were going to close the theater she persuaded me to go look at it,” he said Tuesday. “We all know we lose a lot of money that’s going to Rochester and Buffalo. It’s not fair to Larry’s or to J.C. Penney or to me.”

The owner of Next Level Fitness, City Slickers Bar & Grill and other city commercial and residential properties, Mistler didn’t want to see another business close its doors. Especially the theater that first opened here in 1939. Helping to keep it going will hopefully retain some of the more than $30 million in sales that city consultants said were leaving Genesee County, he said.

The Batavian article:

Downtown Batavia needs a theater, according to local businessman Ken Mistler, and when Dipson announced that its Batavia location needed to be sold or it would close, Mistler stepped in and bought it.

Now comes the hard work and expense of upgrading the two-screen movie house, and Mistler wants to know what moviegoers want from their local theater.

The theater is now called the Batavia Showtime.
