Battle Creek, MI: Former Cheap Flicks to Open in 2016

Posted on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 and updated on Monday, November 16, 2015 11:53 AM

The Cheap Flicks in Battle Creek, Michigan closed in 2014, but it's being renovated by Moore Theatres, which has four locations in southwestern Michigan.

The Battle Creek Enquirer published an article recently about the company's efforts to renovate the theater, which included a new coat of paint on the building's exterior:

Plans to renovate the former Cheap Flicks theater into a first-run movie house are moving ahead with a tentative opening date scheduled for sometime in 2016.

Carol Moore of Kalamazoo, owner of Moore Theatres, said new screen frames are being installed this week while new speakers are ready for installation and theater drapery will be discussed at the property in the near future. Renovation plans for the theater include new, wider seats with increased leg room, expanded bathrooms and self-serve popcorn and soda stations.

Moore has yet to unveil the floor plan, the menu of food items the theater will offer or the style inside the theater, though the outside is coated in blue, green and gray paint with designs reminiscent of 8-bit video games.

Of the site, Moore said the plan is not to compete with the area's other movie theaters, but to draw in movie-goers for a first-class experience at the box office.

"We run a little differently and also I don’t realty think another theater is our competition," she said.

When it opens, the theater's closest competition will be the Goodrich W. Columbia 7 Theater, which is less than a mile away, and the Carmike Lakeview Square Cinemas, which is located south of I-94 in the Lakeview Square Mall.

I'll be looking forward in going to the new movie theatre in Battle Creek. I went to that movie theatre in the 1990's under the title Towne Cinema when it was under the movie chain GKC Cinema. My last movie experience there was in 2001. Now the theatre will become first run, it going to compete with West Columbia 7 over current movie titles. It could also mean bringing back independant movies. something that has been missing from Battle Creek theatres for many years.
