Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast opened in theaters 30 years ago, on November 22, 1991.

Has it been 30 years already?

In that time, the movie has become a classic in Disney's collection, with memorable lines, singable songs, and a wonderful combination of an engaging story and top-notch animation. It also enjoyed multiple theatrical re-releases, with an IMAX version, a 3D version, and a sing-a-long version. It also had a spin-off movie, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, which came out in 2017.

It also was remade in 2017 as a live-action movie starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the titular roles. While that movie was popular in theaters, it did not capture the same following that the original did. Sometimes, older is better and animated is better than live-action. But, that's ok. It's good to have choices!

How to Watch It

If you've never seen the 1991 original (gasp!) and you don't have it on video (gasp!), you have a few options. Unfortunately, none of them are to see it in a movie theater. It's not currently playing anywhere in the United States at the time of this writing, which seems to us to be a missed opportunity.

That leaves home viewing. You can purchase the movie on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Amazon.com for under $20. It includes the movie on 4K disc, regular HD Blu-ray, and a digital code. You also can purchase the movie from Amazon Video for about $20, but rentals are not available.

Of course, the final option is probably the most obvious. The movie is available to watch on Disney+, which is the company's streaming service.

However you choose to watch it, this is a great opportunity to sit down and enjoy the movie all over again. And remember why it's regarded as a Disney classic.
