The Colonial Theatre in Belfast, Maine will be closing September 19, 2022.

The Colonial Theatre dates back to 1915, but it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1924. In 1995, it was purchased by Therese Bagnardi and Michael Hurley, and now they plan to retire.

Before the projectors go dark on the 19th, owners are celebrating their 27 years of operating the three-screen movie theater by playing free movies. Starting on September 9, they began playing an assortment of 36 movies, including Alien, Casablanca, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Titanic, and more.

The last showing will be Sunday, September 18, when they will be showing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Forrest Gump, and The Last Picture Show.

The theater is for sale, so if you have $1.3 million available, you could take the movie theater over and keep the movies playing!

After it closes, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Alamo Theatre in Bucksport, the Strand Theatre in Rockland, and the Flagship Cinemas - Thomaston.
