Berkeley, CA: After More Than 90 Years, Regal UA Berkeley Closed

Posted on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 and updated on Thursday, February 8, 2024 11:41 AM

'Closed' sign

The Regal UA Berkeley in Berkeley, California has closed. The closure was announced in January, when Regal listed 39 locations that would be closing around the country. Regal's parent company Cineworld filed for bankruptcy in September.

The historic movie theater traces its roots in the community back to September 16, 1932, when it opened as the United Artists Berkeley with one screen. Over the years, it expanded to two, five, and then seven screens. United Artists was purchased by Regal Cinemas in 2002 and the combination of Regal, United Artists, and Edwards Theatres became known as the Regal Entertainment Group. Cineworld acquired Regal Entertainment Group in 2017.

News articles (see below) mention the possibility that the theater will be demolished, but the art deco facade may remain. While perhaps this is better than a complete demolition and destruction of this part of Berkeley's movie history, it would be just a facade that would remind people that what you see there is just an illusion; an illusion that isn't as good as watching images on a big screen telling a story of adventure, romance, or drama.

Berkeleyside published a farewell article recently (see below) that recounts the movie theater's long history in Berkeley and it's worth reading.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Pacific Film Archive and the Rialto Cinemas Elmwood in Berkeley, and the AMC Bay Street 16 in Emeryville.
