Movie Promotional Banner

Marvel Studios' Black Widow is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 14, 2021.

Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, as she confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. The movie also stars Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour.

After many delays because of the coronavirus pandemic, the movie opened in theaters and on the Disney+ streaming service July 9, 2021. The movie was not included in the Disney+ subscription, but rather was available to subscribers for an additional $29.99 fee.

It opened in the #1 spot in the Box Office with $80 million in the United States. Disney was sure to talk about the fact that it earned more than $60M on Disney+ as part of the $219M worldwide total. Unfortunately, it became the most pirated movie right after, which may have accounted for its 67% decline the following weekend, and this weekend's 56% decline (but still in the #3 spot).

No matter what its final box office numbers will be, there will be a contingent of Marvel fans that will certainly buy this movie for their collections. That means that plenty of people will be ordering the movie on disc and via their favorite streaming services.

Black Widow will not be available as part of the Disney+ subscription until October 6, 2021. The press release from Disney says that online purchases will be available August 10, 2021, so watch for more details on that.

Video Format Note

The press release mentions that the aspect ratio for both the digital and physical editions will be 1.85:1. While the movie was released in 2.39:1 in traditional theaters, 22 minutes of the movie reportedly was shown in 1.9:1 in IMAX theaters.

At this point, we're not sure if Disney is going to be switching aspect ratios during the movie (as has been done with some movies, especially those done by Christopher Nolan), or if they have cropped the entire movie to 1.85:1, or what.

The press release does not mention HDR in any way, so more details are likely on the way.

We've reached out to our contacts at the studio to find out more information.

July 27, 2021 Update: We heard back from Disney, and the aspect ratio will be 2.39:1. They did not confirm if the aspect ratio will change for the IMAX scenes, so we are going to assume that means it will not.

Disney also confirmed that the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will be HDR10 high dynamic range.
