Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of 'Gladiator'

Posted on Tuesday, May 5th, 2020 6:05 PM

Still from the movie

May 5, 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe as a Roman general who runs afoul of the new heir to the throne after his beloved emperor dies.

The movie debuted at #1 and stayed in the top 10 for nine weeks running, eventually making more than $460 million worldwide.

Even though the movie was released in May, the movie was not forgotten when awards season came around.

It was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Director (Ridley Scott), Best Music (Score), Best Sound, Best Writing, and Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

It ended up winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Sound, and Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing.

It won "Best Drama" and "Best Original Score" at the 58th Golden Globe awards, and "Best Film" at the BAFTA Awards, which is the British equivalent of the Academy Awards in the U.S.

To answer the Spaniard's question: we were entertained!

You can see what our Readers think of the movie by going to the Reader Reviews page for Gladiator. My review is somewhat tepid compared to my lasting regard for the movie, and I believe that it was colored by a lackluster presentation at the movie theater. Since that time, it has been a valued part of my movie collection, and I recommend it to everyone who can handle the action/battle scenes that are an integral part of the story.

The movie was supposed to return to theaters for its anniversary, but the coronavirus shutdown put those plans aside. You can watch the trailer for that release below.
