The Carmike Beverly Cinema 18 in Champaign, Illinois closed February 14, 2013. As we reported in June 2012, the theater is coming down to make way for a new 13-screen Carmike theater in the same location. The new theater is expected to open some time in the Summer of 2013.

The News-Gazette published an article about the closing:

The company initially said the Beverly would be "open and operating for guests during construction, with sections blocked off."

But now it's time for the old complex to be torn down — to allow entry to the new complex immediately to the north.

"We stayed open as long as we could," said Terrell Mayton, director of marketing for Carmike.

Of ongoing construction, he said, "it seems to be moving along well. We expect to be open in summertime."

Until the new theater opens, moviegoers in the area will need to visit the Goodrich Savoy 16 Theater in nearby Savoy to enjoy mainstream movies on the big screen.
