Posted on Friday, October 30, 2009 4:12 PM

Cinemark opened three of their new XD large format screens in Texas and Nevada this week, continuing their expansion of an apparent competitor to IMAX screens. The Cinemark Tinseltown USA Pflugerville in Pflugerville, Texas (near Austin) and the Cinemark Tinseltown USA - El Paso in El Paso, Texas opened on Wednesday (October 28, 2009) and the Century 16 South Point in Las Vegas, Nevada opened today.

As with the recently-opened XD auditorium at the Century San Francisco Centre in San Francisco, California, moviegoers at each of these locations will be greeted with a large wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor screen (of unspecified size), plush seats, and a JBL sound system that has more than 30 speakers. Digital Cinema Projection is being handled by a 30,000 lumen Barco projector.

"We are very excited to introduce these new Cinemark XD, Extreme Digital Cinema auditoriums to our valued customers in Austin, El Paso, and Las Vegas," comments Alan Stock, Cinemark's Chief Executive Officer. "The Cinemark XD environment engages all of your senses and pulls you into the movie. We exhibit the newest movies every week in these auditoriums, including Real D-3D pictures."

That final sentence implies that the new XD auditoriums will be capable of 3D presentations using Real D's technology.
