Cinemex Holdings USA, Inc. and Cinemex USA Real Estate Holdings, Inc, which operate movie theaters under the CMX and Cobb Theatres brand names in several states, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to multiple news reports.

Communications from the company laid the blame on the conditions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, which has closed theaters around the country, as well as unfavorable terms with the movie studios and landlords.

What does this mean for the movie theaters the company operates around the country? Only time will tell, but it doesn't sound good. It's possible that the company will come out of this on the other side and resume operations, but it's also possible that a buyer will come along and snap up some or all of its locations, and it's also possible that the theaters will be closed and be vacant until individual buyers come along or the landlords find other tenants.
