The Shaker Square Cinemas in Cleveland, Ohio closed January 30, 2019, but will reopen later under new management, according to a news report.

Update: The theater is expected to open as the Atlas Cinemas at Shaker Square on February 14, 2019.

On its final day, the theater posted the following message to its Facebook page:

Today is our last day in operation under Cleveland Cinemas. Thanks to so many of you for being a part of our story! It has been Cleveland Cinemas' pleasure to be a part of the historic Shaker Square community for the past 18 years.

After today CLE Cinemas gift cards, coupons & other promotions will not be accepted here. Any CLE Cinemas gift card or coupon issued at Shaker Sq will be valid at any of our other locations incl Apollo Theatre, Cedar Lee Theatre, Chagrin Cinemas, Tower City Cinemas & Capitol Theatre

The theater was operated by Cleveland Cinemas, which operates six other theaters in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

According to an article published by the Cleveland Plain Dealer recently, Atlas Cinemas will be taking over the theater and will reopen it in a few weeks:

The curtain will fall at the end of this month on Cleveland Cinemas’ 18-year run as operator of the historic movie house on Shaker Square.

But there’s a coming attraction: Another independent theater operator plans to step in. Atlas Cinemas has signed a lease to take over the six-screen complex, which it plans to reopen in mid-February after repainting and cleaning the interior, overhauling the concession stand and refreshing the marquee.

Later this year, Atlas also hopes to renovate the bathrooms, update the sound systems and upgrade the seats – to overstuffed chairs, at least. Recliners are a possibility, said Gabriel Saluan, the company’s local owner and vice president, but they might take up too much space – and, in turn, require too large a reduction in the total number of seats – in the modestly sized venue.

Atlas Cinemas currently operates five theaters in Ohio, with the closest being the Atlas Cinemas Eastgate 10, which is about eight miles away.

Until the Shaker Square Cinemas reopens, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the aforementioned Cedar Lee, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, and the Tower City 11.

According to our records, the Shaker Square Cinemas first opened in 1937 as the single-screen Colony Theatre. It became a five-screen location in 1992. Cleveland Cinemas started operating it in 2000.
