Movie PosterSteven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind opened in theaters in 1977 and the movie's 40th anniversary is being celebrated with a one-week engagement of the Director's Cut version of the movie. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 40th Anniversary Release opens in theaters Friday, September 1st, 2017.

"The release of Close Encounters ushered in a new way of approaching science fiction that has influenced countless filmmakers in the decades since," said Adrian Smith, President, Domestic Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. "We couldn't be happier to celebrate its 40th anniversary by introducing it to a new generation of film fans through this special engagement."

This is an all-new 4K restoration, using the original 35mm camera negative, according to the press release issued by Sony Pictures.
