The former IMAX Theatre at the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Iowa has reopened with a new Digital Cinema Projection system, according to recent article in the Quad City Times:

A better-quality picture for a fraction of the cost was enough to entice Davenport's Putnam Museum into the digital age for its giant screen theater.

The theater, which opened 10 years ago next month, has a rechristening today after 3 1/2 weeks of renovation and conversion from IMAX to a digital projection system made by Evanston, Ill.-based D3D Cinema.

:

What audiences will notice immediately is a better-quality picture, said Scott Fateux, D3D's operations manager.

"The main differences you'll see are a constant and steady image, very clear, very stable," he said. "You're going to see a very crisp (picture), higher contrast, higher details in the colors."

The Putnam will still be able to show IMAX-branded movies, including a current deluge of commercial films.

"For Hollywood content, it's going to be displayed the way it was shot, in a wide-screen format," Fateaux said.

The advent of the system in movie theater chains, such as Rave Motion Pictures' Davenport location, has diluted the IMAX brand, Kempf said.

"In today's digital world, IMAX is no longer truly differentiated, we believe," he added.
