Dillon, MT: Big Sky Cinemas Closing This Week

Posted on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 4:17 PM

Closed Sign

A closed sign will be figuratively or literally hanging on the doors of the Big Sky Cinemas in Dillon, Montana when it closes this week.

Located on North Montana Street, the movie theater announced its closing on its Facebook page recently:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the closure of Big Sky Cinema in Dillon, Montana. Our last night for movies will be Wednesday April 29th. For more than 40 years, the theatre and the owners, Howard and Ayron Pickerill, have been proud to serve the Dillon community providing a place for families, friends, and neighbors to gather, share stories, and experience movies together.

This decision was not made lightly. Over the past several years, the cost of operating the theatre has increased significantly. Like many small-town cinemas, patrons have not returned to the theatre in the same numbers following the COVID-19 pandemic. Continuing to operate would also require substantial additional investment into an aging building and equipment. Unfortunately, the theatre is not producing enough revenue to cover expenses, let alone justify further investment.

We also want to be clear: this closure is not a reflection of the theatre's management, staff, or their dedication. Our team has worked hard to provide a welcoming, enjoyable experience for every guest. The reality is simply the decrease in attendance and the financial challenges facing small, independent theatres has forced our hand.

Big Sky Cinema has been honored to be part of Dillon for more than five decades. We have loved being part of community traditions weekend outings, family movie nights, first dates, fundraisers, school events, and countless shared memories. The support from the community over the years has meant everything to us.

The Pickerill Family is incredibly grateful to everyone who has visited, worked at, and supported Big Sky Cinema throughout its history. Dillon is a special place, and it has been a privilege to serve this community.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives for over 40 years.

With sincere appreciation and heavy hearts,
Big Sky Cinema
Pickerill Family, Owners

According to our records, the theater originally opened October 27, 1973 as the Big Sky Cinema I and II. Its closure is a reminder that we need to patronize the movie theaters if we want them to succeed. They cannot be just decorations that we admire as we drive by, because, if everyone just drives by, they cannot endure.

Showtimes

The announcement says that the theater will be closing April 29, but they are providing showtimes that go through April 30, 2026. We're not sure if they intended to run out the rest of the month or if they really will be turning off the projectors tomorrow night. To see what's playing and when, please visit the Showtimes page for the Big Sky Cinemas.

Where to Watch Movies on the Big Screen

Once the theater does close, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters. Unfortunately, there aren't any movie theaters within 40 miles of Dillon. The closest theater is the Madison Theatre in Ennis, which is almost 45 miles away.
