The Reel Mountain Theater in the Stanley Village Shopping Center in Estes Park, Colorado has closed. Its last day of operation was August 29, 2024.
Located on the northeast corner of Big Thompson Avenue and East Wonderview Avenue, the movie theater originally opened May 20, 1987 as the Stanley Village Cinemas. The theater's final day was memorialized on its Facebook page with the following message:
The time has come: it is our last day open. This is a sad situation for our town and theater family, but with the changes in time and technology it is necessary. We are very grateful to those who have been our customers for so many years and hope that you will remember and support the Historic Park Theatre downtown. Our downtown location will absorb much of the Reel's newer equipment (and seats!) and will make this an even more enjoyable location to see that movie on the big screen. We hope to continue to see your faces at The Park, and once again, thank you for many great years at The Reel watching the best of movies. Thanks to everyone!
The theater's sister operation referenced in the message is the Historic Park Theatre, which is less than a mile to the southwest on Moraine Avenue. Aside from that local option, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Metropolitan MetroLux Dine-In Theatres at the Foundry in Loveland.
Estes Park sits just east of the Rocky Mountain National Park. The town is best known to movie fans as the site of the Stanley Hotel, which was the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's novel and movie, The Shining. The hotel is just north of the Stanley Village Shopping Center.
