Warner Bros. Pictures announced this week that it will unveil a six-minute opening sequence of its upcoming Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience, at select IMAX theaters on Friday, December 16th, 2011.

The movie opens in theaters on July 20, 2012, and is the conclusion of director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy that started with Batman Begins in 2005, and was followed by the immensely popular The Dark Knight. When he made The Dark Knight for its 2008 opening, Nolan used IMAX cameras for certain segments of the movie, and its opening sequence was previewed in theaters in advance as well. When seen in IMAX theaters, those segments were incredible, and many hoped (ourselves included) that it would mean that more filmmakers would take the opportunity to use the high quality available in 70mm film to make movies. Sadly, the digital revolution swept through the movie camera business as well, and filming in 70mm is still a niche event.

This preview is not happening in just any IMAX theater, mind you, but a select number of them that still have 70mm film projectors instead of the newer IMAX Digital Cinema Projection systems. Nolan increased his use of the IMAX 70mm cameras for The Dark Knight Rises, so it's only fitting to see the movie in a 70mm IMAX film environment if possible. It's perhaps that thinking that has created this situation, where only a select few theaters across North America and in the UK will be able to show the preview to audiences.

Christopher Nolan stated, “Our experience on ‘The Dark Knight’ shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring. The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format. Giving the fans an early look at an IMAX sequence is a great way to draw attention to what I believe will be an incredible way to experience our story when it comes out next summer.”

A few weeks ago, there were rumors of this preview happening before showings of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol: The IMAX Experience, which makes sense, due to that movie's release on December 16th, but there is no mention in the press release about when exactly the preview screenings will be taking place. Our money is on the rumor being true, and not a separate viewing that would require separate admission and exits from the theater.

The trick for many is going to be finding an IMAX theater that hasn't been converted to the digital systems yet. At first, only the multiplex (MPX) systems that were installed into pre-existing movie theaters were converted to the smaller and cheaper digital systems, but now many venues that were dedicated builds for film-based IMAX are being converted as well. Fortunately, Warner Bros. Pictures has supplied a list of the theaters that will be showing this preview! That list appears below.
