Fort Walton Beach, FL: Cinema Plus Closed

Posted on Thursday, October 11, 2018 and updated on Monday, October 26, 2020 2:30 PM

The Cinema Plus in Fort Walton Beach, Florida has closed. The theater was located on Miracle Strip Parkway.

According to an article published recently by the Daily News, the building in which the theater resides was sold and the rent was increased to the point where operating the theater wasn't possible:

James Coleman, who has leased the building for Downtown Cinema Plus since 2014 from the Tringas family, announced the theater’s closure Thursday.

“The building where our theater is located has recently been sold and our lease was up for renewal,” Coleman said on the theater’s website. “We were not given any notice of the sale or the subsequent 110 percent increase on our lease. We do not have any other recourse except to cease operating as Downtown Cinema Plus as of close of business Thursday, Oct. 4.”

:

Nabors told the Daily News earlier this month that the theater would be transformed into a 1960s-style venue by the start of 2019.

“We didn’t want to buy the theater and continue in the condition that it’s in,” Nabors said. “We really wanted to work with the current tenant and/or a new tenant to have the opportunity to fix up the theater and bring it back to a condition that fits the master plan and direction we’re going in downtown.”
