Fremont, MI: Fremont Cinemas Closing September 16, 2020

Posted on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 6:55 PM and updated on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 8:12 PM

The Fremont Cinemas in Fremont, Michigan will be closing for good September 16, 2020.

Located about 28 miles northeast of Muskegon, the theater announced the closure on its Facebook page recently:

Everyone knows we have done everything we could to push thru this pandemic. We have done fundraisers to get us thru (which was only meant to get us thru to August) with the anticipation that we would have been given to go ahead to reopen by then. We even waited until the end of August with no reopening date. Finally at the end of August we made the decision to reopen anyways because new movies started and we couldn’t stand by and stay shut down any longer. While business did pick up, it still wasn’t as much as we had hoped. We understand the reality that a lot of people are afraid and the governors orders keeping theaters closed as the last business closed, has given the false impression that theaters are unsafe, even though we have taken every precaution just like other businesses.

Despite all this we were still trying to push thru but today we were told by Warner Bros. That because we have still not been given the OK to reopen that we must pull Tenet off screens after this weekend.

Unfortunately, this latest setback (and having no date to reopen in the future along with no new movies) has forced us to close and declare bankruptcy.

Our last day of business will be next Wednesday September 16th.

We encourage anyone with gift cards to please use them and see one last film before we close for good. All of our studio store items will also be 1/2 off.

As far as yearly passes- if you have unused ones we will try to honor refunds here at the end of the month once funds allow and we will announce a refund process for those in the future.

Thank you everyone for a great 7 years. We wish it would have turned out better and we hope you will all continue supporting other theaters and local businesses as much as possible as they need all the help they can get right now!

The theater apparently decided to open to the public recently in spite of the statewide closure by order of the Governor, but that still wasn't enough to keep the business afloat. Its sister theater, the Harbor Cinema in Muskegon, Michigan announced that it was closing permanently last month.

Once the state of Michigan allows movie theaters to reopen, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the NorthStar Cinemas - Whitehall in Whitehall and Celebration! Cinema - Cinema Carousel in Muskegon.
