'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Coming to 4K Ultra HD in August 2017 - Disney's First UHD Title!

UltraHD Blu-ray LogoThe 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format has been available to consumers since around February 2016, with Samsung providing the first player (the UBD-K8500) and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Warner Bros. Home Video, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment providing the first titles on disc. Since that time, several other manufacturers have released players, second-generation players have been released, and more than 100 movies are available on the format. Sales have been very good, likely bouyed by the sales of 4K televisions (nearly all mid- and top-tier TVs sold are 4K).

However, no format is going to get far without Disney coming on board. That fact has caused the industry and enthusiasts to hold their collective breath, waiting for Disney's first UHD release.

Several home theater news sites are reporting that the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, on home video will be the first such release. The movie opened in theaters in May, and is now due for release on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on August 22, 2017. (It's also going to be on DVD, but we've stopped covering DVD releases for the most part.)

The announcement isn't official yet, but The Digital Bits mentions that it will be in the next few weeks. Disney is holding their D23 Expo between July 14-16, 2017, and that would be an excellent opportunity for such news.

Of course, this issue is much larger than just one movie. While many are very happy about this news, many more are going to be shouting their wishlists (Star Wars, every Pixar movie ever made, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. etc.) as soon as any announcement is made. Disney's release schedule is ripe with big releases that would benefit from their entry into UHD, with the upcoming home video releases for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Cars 3 in the next few months, as well as those for upcoming theatrical releases, including Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Thor: Ragnarok, and others.
