A "closed" sign will be hanging on the doors of the Marcus Lakes Cinema in Hermantown, Minnesota soon.

Located near the airport outside of Duluth along Miller Trunk Highway (Route 53), the 10-screen movie theater will be showing its last movies on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

The news was announced on the theater's Facebook page recently:

Marcus Lakes Cinema will be showing movies for the final time this Sunday, April 19. We hope you’ll join us for one more visit as we celebrate the many Magical Movie Memories made here together.

Thank you for your support over the years. It has truly meant so much to be part of this community!

No reason was given for the closure, but we suspect that it might be due to the amenities offered at this location vs their downtown location, the Marcus Duluth Cinema, at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center on Harbor Drive. That location has DreamLounger recliner seating and an UltraScreen premium auditorium, both of which are not available at the Lakes Cinema. 

The Lakes Cinema location originally opened December 10, 1993 as the Lakes Theatre 8 (Cinema Entertainment Corp.). The company also operated the downtown location, which was known as the Duluth 10 Theatre until Marcus Theatres purchased Cinema Entertainment Corp. and its 11 locations in 2007.

Where to Watch Movies on the Big Screen

After Sunday, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Marcus Duluth Cinema, the Zinema 2 on East Superior Street, and the West Theatre on North Central Avenue.
