The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - Mainstreet in Kansas City, Missouri closed in March 2020 along with every Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas location as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the theater has announced that it will not reopen:

Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet is now closed.

Last March, we temporarily closed Mainstreet along with every other Alamo Drafthouse location. Nearly a year later, we’re incredibly sad to tell you that because of the ongoing impact of COVID, we will not be reopening Mainstreet.

Opened a century ago this October, the theater has so much history in its walls, having hosted the likes of Cab Calloway, Charlie Chaplin, and the Marx Brothers. We’re honored to have been its custodian for the past nine years.

To our team members past and present, our endless thanks and gratitude. It’s been your passion, hard work, and dedication that made Mainstreet a unique and wonderful home for film lovers in Kansas City. To our guests in the Kansas City area – thank you so much for your support over the years.

Located on Main Street, just north of I-670 (Jay B. Dillingham Freeway), the theater originally opened in 1921 as the Main Street Theatre. It was known as the Empire Theatre from 1960-1985. It was previously known as the AMC Mainstreet 6 until it closed in mid-June 2012. It reopened as an Alamo Drafthouse location in late June 2012.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas filed for bankruptcy today. Also announced today, the Alamo Drafthouse Marketplace in New Braunfels and the Texas the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - The Ritz in Austin, Texas have closed as well.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Screenland at Tapcade, the Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre, and the Screenland Armour in North Kansas City.
